6 Tips for Entrepreneurs During the Holidays

6 Tips for Entrepreneurs During the Holidays

If you’re an entrepreneur or self-employed, chances are you struggle with taking any real time off. Sure, your lifestyle may allow you to “work from anywhere,” but you’re not recharging the batteries when you’re chained to your smartphone or iPad, even while sitting at the beach.

It’s never easy for a business owner to take time off. For starters, taking a week off usually means no paycheck for that time. And more importantly, when you're a solo entrepreneur or small business owner, there’s the very practical matter of figuring out who's going to mind the shop and take care of clients in your absence.

Fortunately, with many clients and vendors also taking vacations for the holidays, the end of the year is practically the one time when it’s easy to sneak in some guilt-free and stress-free time off. Here are a few tips to make your holiday time off as smooth as possible:

1. Give advanced warning.

Everyone is expected to take time off at some point, and any reasonable client or customer shouldn’t bat an eye if you want to take a vacation, particularly on the days surrounding Thanksgiving or between Christmas and New Year’s.

Give your clients and colleagues plenty of time to ask you about any paperwork, projects, invoices, etc. that they might need while you’re out. If you’re lucky enough to have a point person (who doesn’t mind working this time of year), let everyone know his or her contact information. Likewise, if you’ll be checking email or voicemail while out, let people know your parameters. Showing clients that you care about their needs upfront is the key to having a successful vacation without jeopardizing business and relationships.

2. Set your 'online' expectations.

Most experts advise that you should unplug completely during your time off. However, since I rarely heed this advice myself, I’m not going to expound upon it here. Rather than leaving my iPhone behind altogether, I’ve found it helpful to strike a healthy balance between work and home.

For example, when I’m with family and friends, I want to be 100% present. I don’t want to check my email sneakily Christmas morning or be distracted while out catching up with friends. So, I will leave my phone or tablet aside for hours at a time, then excuse myself to catch up on work for half an hour or an hour at a time. Some entrepreneurs choose to set aside one or two hours each morning or evening for work matters.

There's no single approach that works for everyone; the key is to find what’s right for you. But remember, a critical part of any vacation is downtime — and it's hard to rest your brain when all your tech tools are demanding your constant attention.

3. Focus on the big picture during downtime.

With so many businesses shutting down at the end of the year, it’s common for many entrepreneurs, particularly freelancers and contractors, to experience a slow-down in work whether they plan it or not.

If you find yourself with some quiet days or hours, make the most of that time. If you find yourself with some quiet days or hours, make the most of that time. Instead of just tending to some day-to-day work for the sake of staying busy, focus on the big picture instead. The end of the year is a perfect time to reflect on where your business has been and where it’s going. Think about what worked and what didn’t, where you can improve, which products or services were profitable, and how you can better address client needs in the coming year.

4. Make sure your team has balance, too.

Remember that you're not the only one with family and friends this holiday season. If you have employees or contractors working for you, make sure that they feel comfortable and encouraged to enjoy the holidays and some down time.

That way, there will be no resentment and everyone will be ready to hit the ground running in January.

5. Say 'no' if you start to feel stressed.

Being an entrepreneur is a stressful activity just on its own, without the added holiday pressure of travel plans, family get-togethers, holiday shopping, end of the year parties and more. The stress can take a toll on even the most zen person among us.

If you start feeling overwhelmed, chances are you're overcommitted and it's time to pull back. Drop a social engagement or two: It's far better to truly enjoy a few things than feel stressed and frazzled while trying to force everything in.

For your business activities, focus only on the most important items that need to be accomplished; one trick is to make a list of what needs to be done, and ask yourself which one would make the biggest difference to your business (hint: it’s not always responding to whoever is complaining the loudest).

6. Don't apologize.
Most importantly, don't apologize for taking time to relax and enjoy food, drink, family and fun. A break gives our bodies and minds a chance to rebuild and refocus. You’ll come back in January with a fresh perspective, ready to take on more challenges and be more efficient than before.

Wildly popular BBM chat service downloaded 10 million times on Apple and Android devices

Wildly popular BBM chat service downloaded 10 million times on Apple and Android devices

Millions of Apple and Android users who are enjoying what some have called BlackBerry's "forbidden fruit" can rest easy with the knowledge that BBM, the company's mobile instant messaging chat service, will remain free for the foreseeable future.

"It's definitely a free service," Andrew Bocking, executive vice-president of BBM for BlackBerry told The Morning Edition host Craig Norris Friday. "We have other ideas on how to monetize that service."

Bocking said BBM will turn a profit through a combination of marketing and advertising through some yet-to-be-launched features, such as BBM Channels.

BBM Channels is a social networking feature currently in beta testing. Once up and running, it would allow users to amass followers and share content as well as allow BlackBerry to tailor and target ads towards individual users.

"We continue to plan to evolve the service and keep making it more engaging and have more reasons why people will come back to use the service," said Bocking.

Video and voice chatting services for BBM, which are currently available to BlackBerry users only, is also coming soon to the Apple and Android platforms "within months," Bocking said.

The launch of BBM on competing platforms has been largely seen by analysts as an attempt to secure new revenue streams for BlackBerry as it tries to regain its footing in a global smartphone market that many credit the Waterloo-based technology company for inventing.

"This is one we're definitely investing in, this is definitely one of our key strategies, but it's one of many," he said.

Until this week, BBM was only available to BlackBerry users and the buzz surrounding BBM's launch has been considerable, with six million users pre-registering for the app. On Tuesday, BlackBerry boasted that its BBM app had been downloaded 10 million times on Apple and Android devices in the first 24 hours after its launch

The New Mysterious Nokia tablet... Take a look?

The New Mysterious Nokia tablet... Take a look?

Nokia's powerful new benchmarked device may be its long rumoured tablet

The tablet arena may well be Android and Apple's playground but it seems that players like Nokia refuse to be written off without a fair fight. The Finnish manufacturer has long been rumoured to be prepping a slate of its own and if a recent leak is anything to go by, the tablet may be quite near its official unveiling.
Phone Arena came across the performance results of a mysterious Nokia device on the GFXBench. Given the specs of the gadget, the teach world is abuzz with speculation that the device is in fact the elusive Nokia tablet that has been rumoured for a while now.

According to its benchmark results, Nokia's latest offering is quite a powerhouse of features. It runs on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800 chipset and its Adreno 330 GPU. It is powered by Windows, as opposed to Windows Phone, suggesting that it is in fact a slate and not a handset. Though it might have a lot of power and speed on offer, Nokia's newbie might not be in the league of the fanciest slates in the market though.
The display resolution of Nokia's device is listed at 1371 x 771 pixels, which is lower than what most premium slates currently offer. This resolution is close to that of the Microsoft Surface tablet which stands at 1368 x 768 pixels.

In an ever evolving world of tablets, the more competition there is, the better. If Nokia and Microsoft succeed in sprucing up their acts and offer users a powerful, functional tablet that can be used for both work and play, they will actually be able to get bigwigs like Android and Apple sit up and take notice of some serious competition. We will be waiting and watching for Nokia to come out with its next big offering. Stay tuned

The 5 Deadly Clicks: The Links You Should Never Touch (Read More)

The 5 Deadly Clicks: The Links You Should Never Touch (Read More)

Here’s a scary scenario. You’re innocently surfing the Web, maybe on an unfamiliar site, not paying close attention. Suddenly your computer screen fills with illegal pornographic images of minors. You try to navigate away, but a warning screen branded by the National Security Administration’s Internet Surveillance Program pops up with the message: “Your computer has been locked due to suspicion of illegal content downloading and distribution.”

You are then offered a sort of Hobson’s choice: Pay a fine immediately, or face prosecution for downloading child pornography.

The folks behind that scam were actually based in Russia, SC Magazine reported, not NSA headquarters. The number of people entrapped by this type of scam has been increasing exponentially. In a recent report from McAfee, an Internet security company, there were fewer than 25,000 samples of ransomware catalogued per quarter in the first half of 2011. In the second quarter of 2013 alone, the number of new samples multiplied to more than 320,000, (which was double the number in the first quarter of this year).

“During the past two quarters we have catalogued more ransomware than in all previous periods combined,” MacAfee found. “This trend is also reflected by warnings from law enforcement and federal agencies around the globe.”

If you think the most common cyber scam still involves deposed Nigerian royalty eliciting your help to extract fortunes from African banks, your time machine has stalled. Cyber ninjas have become far more creative, sophisticated and inscrutable. With that in mind, here are five links you should never, ever click.

It’s easy to think of spam and phishing as email-based scams. But with the rise of mobile devices, scammers have added mobile apps to their repertoire. Malware attacks on Android phones grew by 35 percent to nearly 18,000 new samples in the second quarter of 2013, according to McAfee.

11 Dumb Things You do With Your Emails

It appears the onslaught will only grow worse. While the number of attempted mobile device hacks increased by just over a third, the total number of new malware applications discovered by McAfee researchers in the second quarter was double the number found in the first. This trend suggests that cyber scam artists are honing their craft.

Mobile malware takes many forms. It could purport to come from your bank. It could trick you into paying for a fake dating app. Some scammers even “weaponize” legitimate apps, turning real programs into spying machines that siphon your location, contact and other data away from legal enterprises and funnel it into the black market.

How to Avoid It: Control the impulse! Don’t just click on any app no matter how cool it seems at first blush. And just because you see it in the app store doesn’t mean it’s safe. Do the research to make sure it’s the real deal before you download.

In the latest and most popular iteration of this scam, con men pose as employees of Microsoft. They send emails, instant messages or texts with warnings that your computer has contracted a virus, and provide a link that you can click so a “Microsoft employee” can fix the problem. The thieves claim to work for different divisions of Microsoft such as Windows Helpdesk and the Microsoft Research and Development Team.

What’s a Bad Credit Score?

Once the scammers gain access, they “can install malicious software, steal personal information, take control of the computer remotely or direct consumers to fraudulent websites where they are asked to enter their credit card information,” according to the Better Business Bureau.

How to Avoid It: Never trust an unsolicited contact. Only provide personal information or agree to a remote access session when you initiate communication. If, for some reason, you are contacted by anyone representing an institution with which you have a relationship, always confirm the authenticity and contact information of the organization before you respond and then only to the appropriate department.

While you mindlessly surf the Internet, you may accidentally click on sketchy ads or spam. Or perhaps you get an email with a tantalizing picture or link, which ultimately sends you to a site rife with illegal pornographic images. Such despicable lures are just one part of the larger epidemic of ransomware.

9 Things You Need to Do When Your Email Is Hacked

How to Avoid It: Pay attention! Absentminded clicking can land you in a world of pain. Also, deal with businesses that are security minded. These businesses have their websites tested at least annually for vulnerabilities, then fix the security gaps before you get trapped in them. Intentionally clicking on illegal sites, however, will (and should) entitle you to a one-way ticket to a federal sleep-away camp for a not inconsequential period of time.

Email, texts or phone calls alerting us to issues with our checking accounts, tax returns and credit cards tend to elicit knee-jerk instant responses (and are designed to do so). A natural tendency is to immediately provide whatever personal information is required to identify ourselves and make the problem go away.

This is not lost on scammers, which is what makes “authority scams” so appealing to those on the dark side. From May 2012 through April 2013, 102,100 Internet users globally received phishing attacks every day, twice the number of recipients the previous two years, according to a report by Kapersky Lab, an Internet security company. Of those attempts, 20% involved scammers impersonating banks. Of all fake and deceptive websites, 50% of those discovered by Kapersky attempted to impersonate banks, credit card companies and other financial services such as PayPal.

How to Avoid It: Before clicking any links, entering any username or password information or flinging any kind of precious personal information into the ether, stop, take a breath and think. No reputable financial institution, or government entity, would ever ask you to provide such data via email; nor would they cold-call potential victims of fraud and request sensitive personal data. If you receive an email alerting you to fraud and requesting that you verify by email your account username and password, it is – by definition – a scam.

For nearly as long as there’s been email, there’s been spam. Creative criminals have used lures of all stripes to entice people into clicking on links in their emails. Email has become the “carrier” for malware. The email subjectmay be about a job, travel, shopping discounts, sex, news, or, the most popular, drugs. McAfee’s research team has found that about 20 percent of all spam emails sent to recipients in the U.S. referenced drugs in the subject line. It’s no wonder with the cost of healthcare in the U.S. that this is a particularly effective subject line. Delivery service notification, in which fraudsters claiming to be from UPS or FedEx say they could not deliver a package, came in a distant second.

How to Avoid It: Don’t take the bait. Why would you buy drugs from anyone who contacts you blindly over the Internet? Your health, your bank account, or both will suffer. And, if you’re expecting a package, contact the shipper directly.

These scams will continue as long as people will fall for them. It’s all about fear, carelessness, curiosity or distraction — any of which can lead to financial issues, health implications or being labeled a criminal — even a sexual predator. The convenience and access of the Internet creates vulnerabilities, opportunities and also requires personal responsibility. Before you click, weigh each against the other and do the smart thing.

NEWS | Nigeria attains 41,000km of optic fibre infrastructure – More Network Coverage?

NEWS | Nigeria attains 41,000km of optic fibre infrastructure – More Network Coverage?

Nigeria has acquired a fibre optic telecommunications infrastructure measuring about 41,000 kilometres, the Minister of Communications Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson, has said.

Johnson said this at the 11th Annual Conference of the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation, which ended in Abuja on Friday.

About 11,000km of the fibre optic network was laid between 2010 and 2013; and 4,000 of this capacity is terrestrial cable along power transmission line.

Fibre optic cable is made from strands of glass and is used to carry high capacity telecommunications signal especially across long distances.

Before the use of fibre optic, copper cable was the popular material but the new material has the advantages of higher capacity and longevity.

Johnson said although Nigeria had acquired tremendous bandwidth capacity on the international scene through the deployment of undersea cables by telecommunications operators, the country had not witnessed marching deployment of fibre optic cables within.

She said, “Bandwidth capacity on undersea fibre-optic networks has increased significantly. Nigeria had access to a potential 4.76Tb/s of international bandwidth capacity at the time the ministry was created in 2010. Since then, an additional 5.1 Tb/s of capacity has been added making a total of 10Tb/s, and this total is expected to increase further to a potential 15Tb/s by 2014.

“The rollout of the terrestrial fibre-optic network is not keeping pace with the increasing international bandwidth landing on Nigeria’s shores. Approximately 30,000km of fibre had been laid as at 2010 and we estimate that an additional 11,000km was laid since then (of which 4,000 was over power line).

“However, additional fibre is mainly duplications along a few commercial routes. The government’s response has been to facilitate increased confidence in the Nigerian communications sector that has led to a willingness to increase investment. This has been done by providing a predictable and stable environment that supports the development of the industry.”

The inadequate broadband capacity, according to her, can also be seen in the insufficient number of base stations deployed by service providers as well as in the growing number of people that require service.

She said, “The number of base stations in Nigeria has increased exponentially since the inception of GSM; from 116 in 2001 to about 21,000 by 2010. The pace of growth has, however, slowed even as some existing base stations have been decommissioned as a result of terror attacks, theft and vandalism.

“Significantly, more base stations need to be deployed across the country to meet our national target of a five-fold increase in broadband penetration by 2018.” In contrast, however, the number of subscribers to telecommunications networks had been increasing, Johnson added, with active subscriber base above 110,000 by the end of July; thus, giving a clear indication that the infrastructure gap in the country was significant

Five things You Must do to Prepare For the End of BlackBerry

Five things You Must do to Prepare For the End of BlackBerry

With BlackBerry on life support, it’s time to accept the likelihood that there won’t be a BlackBerry a year from now. Your business will be in for a rude awakening if it relies on the once-mighty smartphone for mobile communication and productivity.

You don’t need to abandon BlackBerry immediately and run for the lifeboats, but you do need to know what your options are. Here are five things you should start thinking about now in order to prepare for a transition away from BlackBerry.

1. If not BlackBerry, what?

If you’ve built your entire mobile ecosystem around BlackBerry, the first issue you need to address is which mobile platform (or platforms) you should switch to if BlackBerry ceases to be an option.
Michael Homnick
Figuring out what you especially like about the BlackBerry platform is the first step to choosing a suitable successor.
“Ownership matters,” says John Dasher, vice president of product marketing for Good Technology “Assuming your BlackBerry devices are company-owned, is your go-forward plan the same? Or is BYOD in your future? Or maybe a mixture of the two options? The answer here potentially affects your security model and deployment plan.”

Take a step back and consider why your business uses BlackBerry devices. Which BlackBerry features or benefits are most important to your business or your users? With those considerations in mind, you can compare Android, iOS, and Windows Phone to determine which platform(s) can best meet your needs.

2. Mobile device management

BlackBerry essentially invented the concept of mobile device management (MDM). BlackBerry Enterprise Server gives companies direct control over their mobile ecosystem, as well as the tools needed to provision, protect, and manage BlackBerry devices.

BlackBerry is unique among the major mobile device manufacturers in offering its own proprietary ecosystem. Android, iOS, and Windows Phone devices, in contrast, rely on the wireless service providers—and companies that use them have to invest in and implement some sort of third-party MDM system to manage it all.
If you switch to iOS or Android, BlackBerry can still help you with device management.
If you want to switch from BlackBerry to Windows Phone, you’re on your own. But if you choose to migrate to iOS, Android, or both, BlackBerry can help. It offers its customers BlackBerry Mobile Fusion, which extends the familiar BES environment so that it can manage Android and iOS devices along with BlackBerry hardware.

It’s not a permanent solution, but BlackBerry Mobile Fusion gives you a short-term means of transitioning from BlackBerry by attrition. Eventually, however, you may still need to migrate to a third-party MDM.

3. Secure messaging

One hallmark of BlackBerry is BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), its messaging back end. BlackBerry built its reputation on reliable, secure mobile communications. If you’re transitioning from BlackBerry to another mobile platform, the role that BBM used to play for your business will be hard to fill.

“BlackBerry is still the only cell phone provider that bypasses the carriers for messaging,” says Rob Enderle, principal analyst with Enderle Group. “Depending on Internet speed, you may be able to use an instant messaging technology, but it will need to be a secure form, the clients will need to be able to run the related software, and you’ll likely need a low-latency guarantee of service from your carrier to get this to work.”
bbm
BlackBerry had plans (now on hold) to offer BlackBerry Messenger for both Android and iOS devices.
At first blush, Apple’s iMessage may look like a similar platform-specific messaging tool. But iMessage is essentially just SMS text messaging with a little extra Apple polish. BBM has much greater depth of features and is more secure, requiring users to do more than just provide someone’s phone number in order to connect and chat.

BlackBerry intended to ease this transition by offering a BBM app for both iOS and Android. The app would have enabled an organization to begin switching to one or both of those platforms, while maintaining the security, reliability, and familiarity of BBM. The apps are currently on hold, however, following a botched launch that caused BlackBerry to pull the whole thing for the time being.

4. Data protection

BlackBerry is synonymous with mobile security. BlackBerry customers are accustomed to end-to-end encryption out of the box and built-in data protection technologies to secure company data against unauthorized access.

Android, iOS, and Windows Phone are—first and foremost—consumer devices. They can function as well as or better than BlackBerry mobile devices in many business and productivity roles, but they treat things like encryption and data protection more as options than as default features.

As you assess your mobile platform options for replacing BlackBerry, consider how each handles the critical job of protecting data—both on the device itself and during its transfer across the airwaves. Make sure that the inherent security features and capabilities of the mobile platform you choose meet your needs, and confirm that your IT admin will be able to manage and enforce security policies on the mobile devices involved.

5. Alternative apps

Good Technology’s Dasher stresses that apps are crucial, and should play a significant role in your choice of a mobile platform to replace BlackBerry. “Your BlackBerry is likely used for email, calendar and contacts. In the destination plan, think about the additional apps that are needed to ensure employee productivity.”
blackberry email
Finding suitable replacements for your BlackBerry apps is an essential part of making a successful transition to a new platform.
List all of the BlackBerry apps you depend on: email, contacts, calendar, CRM (customer relationship management), VPN, and any others. Then determine whether those same apps are available on other mobile platforms.

If they’re not, you’ll have to do additional research to find appropriate alternatives. If you plan to migrate by attrition, make sure that the alternative app can work alongside the BlackBerry app; and check to see whether you can integrate or transfer data from the old app to the new one to smooth the transition.

Stay calm and carry on

Harry Brelsford, founder of SMB Nation and a loyal supporter of BlackBerry, believes that businesses could use up to 24 months to plan and execute the next phase of their mobility strategy. He notes some potentially serious disruptions on the horizon, including how the Nokia/Microsoft deal will play out, and (of course) what company will acquire BlackBerry. The future is murky.

“It’s one of those strange times in technology,” Brelsford says, “where we don’t know what we don’t know.”

How to Get Free 1000 GB Online for Storage plus Yahoo Chases GOOGLE with Upgraded Mail Service

How to Get Free 1000 GB Online for Storage plus Yahoo Chases GOOGLE with Upgraded Mail Service

Although, it's a legacy property, Yahoo Mail still has millions of users. Owning the inbox is valuable in terms of ad serving and it’s a conduit for other services. And even before upgrading its Mail service, Yahoo had been differentiating with storage. Google's Gmail has generous caps but Yahoo offers unlimited storage, said analyst Ross Rubin.

Before there was Gmail, there was Yahoo Mail. Indeed, most of us probably have Yahoo.com e-mails floating around out there (and probably Hotmail.com addresses, too) whether we use them or not. Of course, millions are still loyal to the service.

Yahoo wants to keep its millions and woo new users to its domain and it’s investing resources into its web-based mail platform Relevant Products/Services to do it. On Yahoo’s 16th birthday, the company is celebrating by making the experience more “intuitive” on the desktop, as well as iOS and Android Relevant Products/Services mobile Relevant Products/Services operating systems.

“We’re introducing ‘conversations’ for those who prefer to view e-mails grouped in threads,” said Jeffrey Bonforte, senior vice president of Communication Products at Yahoo, in a blog post. “At the end of the day, being able to see an entire conversation can save you quite a bit of time. Context is king.”

1,000 GBs of Storage

Bonforte said the company also worked to make Yahoo Mail more efficient. For example, activities you do all the time, like search, starring, and deleting, are now one-click actions that appear when you hover over an e-mail. And in a move to give you more breathing room in your inbox, you can collapse the left-hand toolbar to be more productive.

“Since it’s not a birthday without party favors, we’re making many features previously reserved for premium Mail Plus customers free. Disposable e-mail addresses, enhanced filters and automatic message forwarding are now available for everyone,” Bonforte said. “And if that wasn’t enough, we’re giving you a monstrous amount of storage Relevant Products/Services Relevant Products/Services, 1TB (that’s 1,000 GBs), so you have ample space for all your e-mails and attachments.”

On top of all that, Yahoo hopes to inspire Mail users by dressing up the inbox. The company is rolling out what it calls “visually rich themes,” including curated Flickr photos, for your browser, smartphone and tablet Relevant Products/Services. You can choose a new photo theme in one place and it will apply across all your devices.

Fighting for Ad Dollars
We caught up with Ross Rubin, principal analyst at Reticle Research, to get his take on Yahoo Mail improvements and how they stack up in the web-based mail market. He told us Yahoo Mail and Flickr are the two legacy properties in which the company continues to invest. In fact, he said, Yahoo shuttered many of its fringe services in the name of placing bets on these two properties, as well as new services.

New dawn of Internet Banking in Nigeria - The Cheapest Data Pricing (Read This)

Africa

It was announced this week at the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation’s Annual Forum in Nigeria, that the Alliance for Affordable Internet (A4AI) is to be launched to drive down the artificially high internet prices in emerging African economies. Supported by individuals like Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the founder of the Web, and organisations such as Google, the Commonwealth and USAID, the Alliance for Affordable Internet will campaign for cheaper Internet access – aiming to reduce the cost of Internet access to below 5% of monthly income worldwide, a target set by the UN Broadband Commission. In Mozambique, just 1GB of data can cost over two months’ wages for an average citizen.

This initiative should be setting the banking industry a-buzz with excitement across Africa.
For the last few years, players like Safaricom with MPesa or Airtel Money have been eating into the payments space and customers have built relationships with phone networks rather than banks. As telcos have built up deep insights into the behaviours of retail customers and have slowly moved deeper into the banking territory, banks have been steadily edged out of the picture.

But in a role-reversal, banks now have the opportunity to tilt the balance of influence away from telcos by disintermediating these mobile money providers and recapturing market share through internet and mobile banking. This is particularly important for customers in Africa – as it will enable banks to put a more sophisticated range of products and services into the hands of their customer than is available today from the telcos.

We know banks in Africa are keen to take up innovative financial services products – as shown by the widespread adoption of mobile payments. By offering a suite of new payment products and functionality via Internet or mobile, banks can encourage customers to stay within bank-owned payments ecosystems. This will bypass the telecoms companies’ USSD offerings. In addition, banks will be able to retain all the customer behaviour data – which is so invaluable for banks seeking to model customer behaviours and product needs.

Furthermore, widespread Internet access will provide banks with the opportunity to grow their customer penetration without a heavy investment in new branch infrastructure. Customers instead will be acquired and serviced remotely through digital channels.
This can only be good news for consumers and the banks of Africa – providing a wider range of products and services and supporting economic growth.
