FC Barcelona of Spain may be considering to expand their Nou Camp stadium or move to a new location in January.

This decision is due to the club's quest of increasing the stadium capacity Europe largest stadium from 99,354 to 105,000, and build a roof to cover the ground.

According to bbcsport, the Nou Camp board of directors will vote on the plan early in the new year.

Board spokesman Toni Freixa said: "We've made advances, we have all the information and we're in a position to make a decision."

Nou Camp has been the home stadium of Catalans since 1957, and has hosted two European Cup finals - in 1989 and 1999 - the World Cup in 1982 and the Olympic football tournament in 1992.

Friexa said that the options on ground are; to construct a new stadium on a landed property currently belonging to the University of Barcelona, while the other project involved a "profound re-modelling" of the existing stadium.

He added: "Both would have a capacity of 105,000 spectators, the stadium would be covered.

"It needs to be viable from a technical perspective, urbanist and economic. We would never submit a project that would endanger the sustainability of the club."

Sam, who is the younger brother of footballer Efe sodje, was allegedly caught on tape telling an undercover reporter with The Sun UK magazine that he was paid £70,000 to be sent off the field during a championship match on February 23rd 2013. 

Footage from the football match showed Sam Sodje hitting the crotch of Oldham Athletic's player Jose Baxter, repeatedly for no reason which ultimately earned him a red card. Sam admitted to the undercover reporter that his actions were all preplanned for him to be sent off the pitch. He also said it was easy to get other footballers to do same for a fee. Sam practically ended his football career by collecting £12,000 from the undercover reporter, on tape, for other match fixings.

The British Tabloid has reported its investigation to the National Crime Agency, and NCA said an active investigation is now underway.

For the first time in the history of Nigeria’s participation in the World Cup, the team coach has been given a free hand to determine where his charges will make their home at next year’s event.

"(Stephen) Keshi is presently inspecting a number of possible campsin the South American nation, and specifically around Sao Paulo," Olajire said.

Stephen Keshi, who captained Nigeria in their first appearance at the showpiece in USA in 1994, said he cherished the opportunity afforded to him by the Aminu Maigari administration and would always strive for the best for the Super Eagles.

"I am happy to have been given the free hand to select the team base camp," Keshi said. "You may think it is a small gesture but not every head coach has that privilege. I am certainly going to use the opportunity to select the best for our team."

Keshi’s African champions will contend with two-time world champions Argentina, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iran in Group F.

Most of the 32 participating member associations are also looking around Sao Paulo for their team base camp. A total of 83 locations were offered by the hosts.

A team base camp includes a hotel and training site. All participating member associations must confirm where they will want to be based before the end of next month.

All teams must report to their team base camp at least five days before their first match of the tournament. In the case of Nigeria, that means no later than 11th June, five days before the Super Eagles clash with Iran at the 41,000-seater Arena da Baixada in Curitiba – a city of 1.7million people in the south of Brazil.

The Eagles will then tackle Bosnia-Herzegovina at the 42,000- seater Arena Pantanal in Cuiaba, a city of approximately 550,000 people in the centre west, on 21 June, before flying to the south again to play Argentina in what is Group F’s most anticipated game.

That match comes up at the 48,000-seater Estadio Beira-Rio in Porto Alegre, a city of over 1.4million people, on 25 June.

The 2014 FIFA World Cup draw took place in Brazil today and Nigeria will play against Argentina, Iran and Bosnia-something...lol. Nigeria's opening game will be against Iran and even though Bosnia looks like it will be an easy game for us, the country is ranked higher than Nigeria in the world. They are ranked 21st, while Nigeria is ranked 36th, but I'm sure we'll qualify alongside Messi's Argentina.

 

The 2014 FIFA World Cup draw took place in Brazil today and Nigeria will play against Argentina, Iran and Bosnia-something...lol. A mere glance would not suffice. A second take was required and, in some instances, a long, astonished, hard stare at the three digits on the track side clock.

It had stopped at 9.91. The 10-second barrier had been broken. Not for 20 years had a Briton covered 100m quicker.

For those who suspected glitches and gremlins in the officials’ stopwatches, the full-throated celebratory roar from the man himself, James Dasaolu, was an indication that what had happened was not an illusion, a mirage during the summer heatwave.

A month on from the British Championships, when Dasaolu became the second-fastest Briton in history, much has been written about the 25-year-old Londoner, but even more is expected of the son of Nigerian parents.

Former Olympic and world 100m champion Donovan Bailey believes the quiet and articulate sprinter can achieve great things, while Colin Jackson, 1993 and 1999 110m hurdles world champion, bristles with excitement when talking about the world being the Croydon Harrier’s oyster.

But can Dasaolu push his fragile body to the limit for a possible four races in two days? Ahead of Saturday’s heats in the Luzhniki Stadium, Dasaolu has not been seen competitively on a track since his blistering run at the Alexander Stadium on that warm July day.

Niggling injuries, the most recent a tight hip flexor, have troubled him, but his performance in Birmingham suggests the south Londoner could bring home the first British medal in track and field’s show-stopping event for a decade.

It would fulfil the promise Dasaolu showed when, as an 18-year-old, he decided to dedicate his life to sprinting.

Indeed, Mark Lewis-Francis had predicted his British team-mate would break through in 2011, but injuries – to his calf, heel and hamstring – meant Dasaolu’s headline-grabbing performances arrived later than many had anticipated.

“We’ve known about James for a long time,” Jackson admits. “He’s a precocious talent, a natural athlete. One of these tall, beautifully fluid runners. He has it all.”

Former Olympic 200m silver medallist Darren Campbell talks as enthusiastically as Jackson about the sprinter.

Campbell’s bronze medal in the 100m at the 2003 World Championships makes him the last British man to win a global medal in athletics’ blue riband event.

“For James, it was a case of staying healthy,” Campbell told BBC Sport.

“One of the keys to sprinting is trying to manage power and relaxation, which sounds crazy, but once you hit top speed you have to relax.

“It’s a difficult thing to do, but over the years when I’ve watched James, his transition is smooth, there’s nothing forced about it, which means you decelerate less.

“This year is not a flash. For the last four or five seasons he’s run a quick time but then disappeared because of injuries, which means he’s not cemented his name in people’s consciousness – but this year he’s a serious contender.”

Dasaolu credits coach Steve Fudge, whom he teamed up with last year, for helping him join the sprinting elite. Dasaolu’s training programme has been rebuilt, his technique refined and he receives regular medical attention.

This week, though, Dasaolu admitted he and his Loughborough-based coach have grown tired of people questioning whether his body can withstand the stresses of a major championship.

“Me and my coach are trying to get away from this tag,” said Dasaolu, whose fitness has been questioned with increasing regularity since he failed to compete in the final of the British Championships and then missed the Anniversary Games.

“I don’t really read the papers. What I look to is the team around me, my coach and the head coach Neil Black, so as long as these people are around me who believe in my body, those are the opinions I really care about.

“It’s all about putting your body to the limits. It doesn’t matter what happened before Moscow, so I am very confident I can do the rounds.”

Dasaolu’s 9.91 in Birmingham was his sixth personal best in his first seven races indoors and outdoors this year, but just 24 hours later his feat was overshadowed by the news Tyson Gay and Asafa Powell, two of the four fastest men of all time, had failed drug tests.

The absence of Gay and Powell plus injured reigning champion Yohan Blake has removed at least three potential medallists from the equation. It means Dasaolu will probably have to dip ahead of either Justin Gatlin or Nesta Carter – two of only three men who have run 100m quicker than Dasaolu this year – to snatch a medal.

The only other athlete to complete the distance in a better time than the Briton is, of course, Olympic champion Usain Bolt.

Former world record-holder Bailey has described the Jamaican, hoping to regain the title he lost in 2011 after a false start in the final, as “not the man – the only man”, suggesting Sunday’s final will be a one-man dash for gold.

But the potential presence of a Briton in the line-up against the great Jamaican in a World Championship final is one that quickens the pulse.

“James is hungry to improve and he can analyse his performance,” says Jackson. “We’ve got one [a top-class British sprinter] and it’s been a while since I’ve been able to say that. It’s exciting.”

In June, the African Champions were rated as the 31st best football playing team in the world before making a downward slide to 35 in the July ranking.

This stagnant position however, was not good enough as they slipped to fifth place in Africa with the Desert Foxes of Algeria taking up their previous fourth position.

Meanwhile Cote d’Ivoire remain at the summit of African football with 962 points which put them in the 18th position in the world while Ghana is 24th in the world and second in Africa. Mali took the third spot on the continent after amassing 735 points which places them in the 32nd spot in the world.

The surprise package on the log is Cape Verde who moved up to the 36th place in the world and sixth in Africa with four points behind Nigeria.

Former Birmingham City striker Christian Benítez died in hospital in Qatar today from complications leading to cardiac arrest at the age of 27. The striker from Ecuador died just weeks after a £10million move to Qatar side, El Jaish.

The Ecuadorian Football Federation said on their website that Benitez 'had severe stomach pain, was rushed to a hospital, where after a few hours suffered cardio respiratory arrest, which ended his life.' 

Christian is survived by his wife, children and his father, former Ecuador international footballer Ermen Benítez. May his soul rest in peace..amen.

Each player was initially getting $5,000 for a draw and $10,000 for a win before the restructuring in the remuneration package due to the poor financial status of the Nigeria Football Federation.

The players had rejected the $5,000 win bonus for beating Kenya in Nairobi last week.

The team were scheduled to leave for Brazil for the FIFA Confederations Cup on Thursday monrning via South Africa but the players refused to leave their Namibia hotel for the airport. They even refused to come down from their rooms for breakfast.

African champions Nigeria took command of Group F of the 2014 World Cup qualifying group after a 1-0 victory over Kenya's Harambee Stars in Nairobi on Wednesday.

Ahmed Musa notched the winner nine minutes from time racing onto a long ball before coolly lobbing goalkeeper Duncan Ochieng to give the Super Eagles a deserved victory at Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani.

It capped off a brilliant afternoon for Musa who tormented the Kenyan backline throughout the match with pace and trickery.

Nigeria now has eight points from four games, two ahead of Malawi who were held to a 0-0 draw by Namibia in Blantyre. For Stars, their hopes of a place in Brazil next are almost over as they prop up the group on two points.

Missing skipper Dennis Oliech and Arnold Origi, Stars started shakily and they almost gifted Nigeria the lead on five minutes after a mix up between Ochieng and Brian Mandela presented Brown Ideye with a chance but he blazed over.

Musa then went close with a freekick on 14 minutes after Ideye had been fouled as Stars struggled to get a foothold in the match.

Kenya’s first sight goal came on the half hour mark but Mandela headed Francis Kahata’s corner wide. Vincent Enyeama was a bystander for most of the half waiting till the 39th minute to make his first save of the match gobbling up Peter Opiyo’s long range effort.

Stand in skipper Victor Wanyama had been Stars’ best player in the opening half but he was unable to keep his shot down after neat interplay between Kahata and Jamal Mohammed on the stroke of halftime.

Nigeria should have gone ahead in the opening minute of the second half when Nnamdi Oduamadi skinned Mandela in the box but Ochieng was quick off his line to make a fantastic save with his feet to keep the scores level.

An injury sustained by Wanyama slowed down the hoists as he was unable to patrol the middle of the park with the same effectiveness a she had in the first half.

The introduction of Anthony Ujah gave them more impetus as they pushed Kenya deeper and deeper with the giant Nigerian providing physical presence in the box.

He headed a cross just wide on 72 and four minutes later, Obi Mikel fired just over from range.

The goal finally arrived on 81 minutes and it was one of stunning simplicity.

Substitute Stephen Waruru lost the ball on the edge of the Nigerian box and from the resulting long ball, Musa held off Mandela and Ochieng before chipping the goalkeeper and quieten the partisan crowd in the stadium.

Nigeria next face Namibia in Windhoek while Kenya travel to Blantyre for a date against the Flames of Malawi.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arrested the Vice President of the Nigerian Football Federation, Mr. Mike Umeh.

According to a statement by the commission’s Acting Head, Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren, Umeh was picked up by operatives of the commission,

Monday, in Lagos following a warrant by a Sokoto High Court. He will appear before Justice Bello Abass of the Sokoto High Court today.

Umeh was an alleged accomplice in the case of money laundering and misappropriation of public funds to the tune of N15billion for which former Governor Attahiru Bafarawa of Sokoto State is standing trial.

Brazil’s Neymar announced Saturday on his Instagram account that he is to join FC Barcelona, who have edged out their great Spanish rivals Real Madrid in a tussle for the young striker’s services. 

“On Monday, I sign a contract with Barcelona. I want to thank the Santos fans for nine incredible years,” wrote the 21-year-old.

Santos had received offers for Neymar from both Barca and Real, according to Spanish newspaper El Pais, quoting the club’s vice-president. Barca confirmed the move on Sunday.

“FC Barcelona and Santos FC have agreed to terms for Neymar da Silva Junior. The Brazilian forward will don the Blaugrana strip for the next five seasons,” said a statement on the club’s website.

Despite his tender age, Neymar has been a first-team regular for Santos for the past four years, scoring 156 goals and providing 77 assists in 256 matches.

In 2011, he guided them to their first Copa Libertadores triumph since when Pele represented the club in the 1960s, and he has already established himself at international level, scoring 20 times in 32 appearances with Brazil.

“It’s a different moment for me, sad (bidding farewell) and happy (new challenges),” he wrote.

Neymar plays his last game for Santos on Sunday against rivals Flamengo, at the opening of this year’s Brazilian football season.

“I want the chance to enter the field one more time… and hear the fans cry out my name,” he wrote.

The young star, who often sports a Mohawk haircut, is a native of Sao Paulo. Youths ask barbers for “a Neymar” when they go for a haircut, and young women scream and chase after him as if he were a rock star.

Brazil lacks the megastars of yesteryear such as Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Robinho, and the country’s hopes for winning the World Cup in 2014 — to be held in Brazil — rest on the young prodigy’s shoulders.
