Chika Ike: Actress, Philanthropist and Businesswoman
Chika Ike is one of an exclusive circle of loved and respected Nollywood stars who is currently gracing the public with her presence.
In 2004, after many failed attempts, she made her debut in the Chico Ejiro-directed movie Sweet Love. Productions followed including Standing Alone by renowned Nigeria director T. Chidi Chikere, followed. It was a good start to a career that was nursed right from age five.
A nomination for Best Upcoming Actress at the 2006 edition of the African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) came in time to help push up her local standing. She has since acted in over a hundred titles, won awards and received multiple nominations, which also include a 2009 nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role at the AMAAs.
Progressing to the top came in beautiful succession for her. In 2008, she starred in the movie Mirror of Beauty, playing the role of an African Princess. Mirror of Beauty recorded colossal success, premiering at London’s Odeon and Cineworld cinemas. It later earned a spot at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival. Directed by Okey Okoh, the movie also won an AMAA award (2008) for Best Music Score, and Best Costume at the Zuma Film Festival. Ike acted alongside other Nigerian movie giants like Mike Ezuronye, Ebere Okaro, Amaechi Muonagor, and Olu Jacobs.
She runs the Chika Ike Foundation, which was started in 2012 at a party, for about 300 children. The foundation’s primary areas include education and streetism, two subjects very dear to Ike’s heart. Despite achieving considerable success in some Nigerian states, the bigger picture for the foundation Ike has said, is to extend it into other African countries.
Her achievements have not gone unnoticed. In 2012, she was appointed a United Nations Ambassador for Peace, in recognition of her tremendous successes, which the international body hopes will be a source of inspiration to others.
